UC Will be Center of National Stroke Network

All federally funded research on how to prevent and treat strokes will be coordinated at the University of Cincinnati. UC officials announced in December it would be the national center for a network of 25 regional stroke centers set up by the National Institutes of Health. The national network comes with a $7.2 million in federal grants over the next three years, with about a dozen new researchers. It will also bring additional credibility to the UC Neuroscience Institute, already one of the few UC medical school centers with a viable national brand.

Signs & Symptoms of Stroke – FAST
The best way to treat a stroke is for people to learn what to recognize using FAST:
- F
  
  Facial numbness or weakness, especially on one side.
- A
  
  Arm numbness or weakness, especially on one side.
- S
  
  Slurred speech or difficulty speaking.
- T
  
  Time to call 911.
Other symptoms of stroke also may include: severe headache, dizziness, loss of balance, loss of vision or double vision. Surprisingly, pain is not a frequent symptom of stroke.
